It seems to me like the Turkish President wants to have it all. Islamic style governance complete with authoritarian trimmings and yet have a functioning infidel capitalistic economy with usurious interest, currency convertability and fiscal necessities. Once the economy goes pear shaped as they usually do in a modern trading economy run by an extreme nationalist then the usual international zionist conspiracy get blamed.

I don't blame President Erdogan for his policies towards Syria as he is wanting Turkey to be the new regional boss. The problem for him is that except for having a large conscript army he doesn't really have the economy or political influence to dominate the area effectively as most of his neighbours remember the Ottoman Empire and hate Turks guts. Except for allies of convenience such as Mr Putin and the Iranians who will dump him at a moments notice he does not really have any allies. It's a pity really as the Turks were staunch members of NATO during the Cold War.
