CH4 is running this at 10PM each evening this week.

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/aug/08/eden-paradise-lost-review-not-lord-of-the-flies-carnage

It is pretty convincing evidence that folk are poorly prepared to get going when the going gets tough. The wide spread sense of entitlement and the cargo cult mentality dominating modern life is well to the fore.

I know these Big Brother meets Zombie Apocalypse productions are highly contrived in that there is a safe escape possible and it is not really do or die and the programme producers promote conflict by design. However both myself and my better half have been gripped by the sheer convincing dysfuntionality of it all.

One poignant scene was a young lass struggling in the middle of a weed filled food garden that was supposed to be helping feed the happy campers. Several male management types came along and told her all the things she was doing wrong without offering to get down and dirty and help out. To folk like this I have always said that if they think it is so easy and they are so fecking clever the perhaps they would kindly care to have a go themselves.

Very significantly 6 people have walked off the site so far and they are all female who reasonably feel they are not there to admire the males by solely providing them with ego stroking sexual and washing up services.

The management types probably know less than they would have you believe. There is the adage, if you want to teach somebody don't tell them, show them.

This group seems to suffer severe penis anxiety and has developed into a full blown Bullingdon Club with their own male only club house. They have instigated a "meat only" diet (I kid you not - a policy worthy of the genius of Boris Johnson) leaving the landscape littered with the left over dismembered bits of sheep, pigs and deer. This has caused the vet to jump ship and his girlfriend foolishly deciding to remain.

Other departures have included two of the more mature members of the group, one of whom bears more than a passing resemblance to our very own Undercover Elephant, who literally have applied a burnt earth policy by torching the dwelling they built so pissed off are they with the others.

Things are rapidly spiraling down hill in a kamikaze descent to oblivion as the senior management team pat themselves on the back because of how well they perceive things to be going their way.

Expect fun and games in the final episode tonight.

I watched one episode and thought it was degenerating into a sequel of Lord of the Flies. As has been said we don't know how the group has been set up by the producers. It is not a random collection of individuals but a group selected to make a TV program so there is an agenda from the start.

In real life, when not if this sort of things happens, hopefully the random group will function a bit better than this group does.

The final episode did not tell us a lot more other than that the experiment was not nearly as isolated from the outside world as appeared to be - secret mobile phones, smuggled luxury goods etc.

Some of the interviews carried out after the event showed powerful signs of unashamed revisionism and self satisfied smugness at gaming the system for personal advantage.

All this does not bode well in the event of this sort of thing having to be done for real. I maintain that the major obstacle in making the best in a scarce future will not be the technical issues, which this forum can obsess on somewhat, but the human factors.

The result of this and similar "experiments" , imperfect as they are, seem to show an inability for autonomous groups to self manage effectively in the absence of a strong and inspirational leadership e.g. wise tribal elders.

Very often people who appear to have a great deal to offer the survival prospects of the project are margianlised rather than nurtured and the resulting social lacuna filled by a dysfunctional bullying clique of self obsessed dick heads. Sad

They could send a film crew to Venezuela and document how these things actually develop. A TV shows occasional resemblance to reality is purely an unintended consequence.

They could send a film crew to Washington and document how these things actually develop.

You beat me to it with the USA thing...

Perhaps Miami or Houston, though.
