And it always comes back to a single solution, which shouldn't need repeating on this forum. _________________ I experience pleasure and pains, and pursue goals in service of them, so I cannot reasonably deny the right of other sentient agents to do the same - Steven Pinker |

If I had a spare 30K I would be less miserable. |

How so? I'm not suggesting he can't do what he wants. _________________ I experience pleasure and pains, and pursue goals in service of them, so I cannot reasonably deny the right of other sentient agents to do the same - Steven Pinker |

I've just taken a look at that BBC video. Quite apart from the extravagance, which I care less about, the fact is it's bloody grotesque.

What really took the biscuit for me was when he said he was doing it to raise money for all of the sick kids down at the local hospital. It immediately struck me that he could have just given the bleeding 30k straight to the hospital! |

I thought that too. I wonder how many of them are sick due to all the shit that's put into the environment while making all that crap, and generating the electricity to power it, and all the other examples of such stupidity in the world. _________________ John

It's probably advertising for his company and claimed against tax.
Saw this further down the page. Far more interesting. _________________ Action is the antidote to despair - Joan Baez |

They are doing what our ancestors have done for thousands of years.
Lighting a bright light and socialising.
Yesteryear it was done with a bonfire and worshipping to gods and spirits.
We have always done this in winter, to bring back the sun and make the crops grow again. Have a wiki at the list of winter festivals, they run from November through to February. It is such a dark and depressing time of year people have always tried to bring heat and light back into their lives.
Take a look at the film again. You will see people doing what YOUR ancestors have always done |

1200 is roughly 8,500 kWh! That would keep around 40 houses well lit with low-energy lighting for a year. I take the point about the winter festivals, but, as usual, it's the sheer scale of the thing, brought about by the simple ability to throw a switch. _________________ Engage in geo-engineering.
