Did anyone catch a very good documentary on BBC2 a couple of months back about 'Global Dimming'.

It seems that atmospheric pollution by visible particulates has measurably decreased the amount of sunlight reaching the ground over the last 50 years. Commerical aviation is thought to be a prime cause, together with general industrial pollution and the burning of forests.

The affect has been to offset and mask global warming. When commercial flights were grounded for 3 days in the US following 9/11 there was a big jump in average temperatures.

So it seems that when oil prices really begin to rise and aviation is drastically reduced, we could face a sudden and devastating rise in temperatures.

Crying or Very sad

It was an episode of Horizon, I included in my list of high-value TV shows:

It gets repeated on non-fiction Satellite channels a fair bit.

In the Uk, the big jump up in temperatures might be welcome news if the gulf stream turns off Crying or Very sad (which is covered in another Horizon episode...)

People should see both if they get the chance

Ah, Horizon, Panorama - both good.

It was a bit of a wakeup call though. Makes you really realise what a fine line we are running.

We might end up in the bizarre situation of having to deliberately release particulates into the atmosphere to shield ourselves from the sun!

How crazy is that?????????

Question

Surely when we start burning coal and wood again in our homes and power stations to make up for the short-fall in the other energy sources we will be releasing an increasing amount of particulate matter into the atmosphere. This will add to this global dimming effect, and maybe even accelerate it...

Or does wood and coal release the ?wrong kind? of pollution to increase the global dimming effect?.

What was interesting during Live-8 was that NOBODY mentioned this Horizon programme which indicated that Global Dimming was the probable cause of the drought in Ethiopia in 1984. We are all complicit.
