One useful thing MPs have access to is a search of the media. I have commissioned a search for the words "Peak Oil" in recent years and the number of appearances are as follows:

2000 - 10
2001 - 9
2002 - 7
2003 - 4
2004 - 35
2005 - 63 (so far)

I think this says something.

Undeniably, that is very revealing, and encouraging.

John.

Could you give us some idea of the scope of 'the media' in this context? Is it an electronic search; any chance of a monthly update?

Thanks

Why then, does a search of www.theyworkforyou.com show that the last time the phrase "peak oil" was uttered in the House of Commons was in July 2005?

Why is it that media is picking up on peak oil but MP's are not?

Another search on "oil" shows that this is discussed frequently, as in the 'Security of Supply' debate of 12 Jan 06, but even then, over 3 hours of debate, the closest we get to a mention of 'peak' is this concerning individual fields from Quentin Davies:

Quote:
Anyone who knows anything about the energy business knows that all gas and oil fields follow a bell curve pattern: once exploitation begins, production increases quite rapidly, then there is a plateau for quite a long time, but when the field begins to run into diminishing returns, production falls sharply away. I am afraid to say that the news can only get worse on natural gas against a background of rising international prices and energy demand.

Is it that the phrase 'peak oil' is now too loaded for an MP to mention publicly because of heightened media attention?

I think it is all about the language...they tend to use phrases like 'Energy Security'...that sounds much more conservative than 'Peak Oil' which I imagine conjurs up quite radical notions such as actually doing something substantial for sustainability.
